Experience Traditional Victorian Tea, Delightful Gardens and Architecture in Downtown Raleigh
Carrying on its decades-old tradition of historic downtown Raleigh preservation, the Oakwood Garden Club will host its 19th annual garden tour on May 3 and 4, 2008. Attendees will be invited to tour the lush gardens of Oakwood and attend a traditional Victorian Tea.
Gardeners, architecture buffs and families looking to spend a pleasant spring day outdoors will find enjoyment on the tour. Oakwood historians will guide tour groups, pointing out notable garden and architectural features from some of the neighborhood's most beautiful sites. Visitors will be treated to interesting history on Raleigh's oldest neighborhood and will find several creative gardening ideas for annuals and perennials, garden paths and plants for sunny and shady gardens. Oakwood also has a wealth of lovely homes spanning numerous architectural styles including traditional Victorian, Queen Anne, Second Empire and Greek Revival, which enthusiasts are sure to appreciate.
The Victorian Tea includes a traditional menu of tea sandwiches, cakes, hors d'oeuvres and other treats. Attendees will learn about the Victorian tradition and experience it as people did over 100 years ago. The Oakwood Garden Club will host the teas at neighborhood homes. There will be seatings at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and each tea will last approximately one hour. With Mother's Day the following weekend, the traditional Victorian tea will be a unique way for mothers and daughters to celebrate early.
The Oakwood Garden Club is dedicated to increasing the knowledge of gardening and working for the beautification and preservation of the community.
