Oakwood is a nineteenth century neighborhood and historic
district located near downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. The
neighborhood includes hundreds of homes in a variety of architectural
styles. Many have been painstakingly restored and preserved
to maintain their original stature and beauty. Additionally,
many residents are avid gardeners and have created and maintained
wonderful gardens. Sidewalks and trees line the quiet streets,
making it an ideal place for a walking tour during an afternoon
visit.
Oakwood provides two opportunities to tour homes and gardens
not generally available to the public. The Candlelight Tour
occurs each December and allows access to the interior of a
number of selected homes. Also, the Garden Tour is presented
once a year to display some of the neighborhood's best gardens.
Additional neighborhood information is available on this website
and may be accessed using the navigation links on the left side
of the page. Also, a walking tour pamphlet can be obtained at
the Capitol Area Visitor's Center (click here for more information). The pamphlet includes a map of the neighborhood
and interesting details regarding a number of homes. |
